Emergency services are vital to the safety and well-being of all citizens. To continue the City of Vaughan’s commitment to providing high emergency response standards, a new fire station – Fire Station 7-12 – is being built at 9511 Weston Rd. This future station will bring emergency response and fire services closer to home for everyone who works, lives and plays in the Vellore Village community.

Based on the number of fire trucks available nearby and the growing needs of the city, Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS) is facing a gap in response times in the Weston Road and Rutherford Road area. Once complete, Fire Station 7-12 will support VFRS’ emergency responses from neighbouring stations – mainly for Fire Station 7-7 (the busiest in one in York Region), Fire Station 7-5 and Fire Station 7-9. As a result, response times in this area and city-wide will improve.

Fire Station 7-12 will be approximately 9,500 square feet, with access to two apparatus bays directly off Weston Road. The building will reinforce a culture of design excellence with strong considerations for heritage context, functionality, accessibility and sustainability. It will be designed to LEED Gold standards and will aim to achieve Zero Carbon Building certification. The station will also be designed to minimize disruptions to services at Vellore School and Vellore Hall, while ensuring safe access to Vellore Heritage Park and trails.

HOW YOU CAN LEARN MORE

Until Friday, Sept. 30, a presentation and supporting materials are available for review at vaughan.ca/station7-12, including a video outlining the history of the project and environmental preservation steps taken.

See the vision come to life through 3D conceptual renderings of the facility and surrounding landscape. Design objectives, safety benefits and more are also available. Questions can be shared with the project team by email at station7-12@vaughan.ca. Responses submitted by the end of the review period will be posted on the project webpage in October.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is the City building a new fire station in this area?

To provide more responsive emergency services, a new fire station – Fire Station 7-12 – will be built at 9511 Weston Rd. The new station will also improve VFRS’s emergency response times from neighbouring stations – mainly for Fire Station 7-7 (located at 40 Eagleview Hts.), Fire Station 7-5 (located at 2 Fieldstone Dr.) and Fire Station 7-9 (located at 9601 Islington Ave.). These continue to be Vaughan’s busiest stations.

Why was the Vellore Hall parking lot, or 9511 Weston Rd., chosen as the location for the new fire station?

The location for Fire Station 7-12 was a strategic choice, made after conducting extensive research, reviewing financial considerations, exploring land availability and evaluating emergency response times – 9511 Weston Rd. was deemed the best location for the new fire station. Additionally, the City already owned the land, providing a cost savings of $3 million. As part of the project, a new public parking lot for Vellore Hall will be constructed and relocated east to an existing open lawn area of Vellore Heritage Park.

This is a heritage district. What considerations have gone into the design of the new building so it doesn’t stand out?

When complete, the new station will exemplify design excellence with strong considerations for heritage context, functionality, accessibility and sustainability. Along with using appropriate materials and colours to be respectful of the historical character of the neighbourhood, the new station is also being designed with significant sustainability goals in mind. It will be designed to LEED Gold standards and will aim to achieve Zero Carbon Building certification.

When will construction begin?

Construction is anticipated to begin in Q1 2023.

Isn’t there already a fire station – Fire Station 7-7 – close by?

Fire Station 7-7 is located at 40 Eagleview Hts., which is approximately two kilometres from the new Fire Station 7-12. Fire Station 7-7 is the busiest station in York Region, and, based on the number of fire trucks available and the growing needs of the city, it was determined that another fire station in this area was needed.
