Share why you will #SlowDownVaughan on the City’s online platform

On New Year’s Eve, you may have resolved to spend more time cooking, reading or exercising, but have you thought about making a resolution to drive safely? Road safety remains a top priority, and the City of Vaughan encourages you to take this opportunity to commit to safe driving in 2022 and beyond. That resolution and adjustments to your driving habits may save a life.

Share this commitment by writing why you resolve to #SlowDownVaughan on the City’s online platform. Here are some of Vaughan residents’ commitments:

“I resolve to #SlowDownVaughan to ensure the safety and well-being of my family and all those who live and work in my community.”

-        Catherine

“I resolve to #SlowDownVaughan to keep our neighbourhood safe for my daughters and their friends who love to play and ride their bikes.”

-        David

You can also share this commitment by posting about your resolution on your social media platforms using the hashtag #SlowDownVaughan (supporting graphics are available on the City’s website), placing a #SlowDownVaughan sign on your lawn and downloading (PDF) and printing a sign to hang in your window.

Lawn signs are available for curbside pickup at community centres (excluding Garnet A. Williams Community Centre while it remains closed for renovations) and the three Vaughan Public Libraries Resource Libraries locations – Bathurst Clark, Civic Centre and Pierre Berton. Signs are produced by the City and are free to Vaughan residents.

The #SlowDownVaughan initiative, launched in November 2021, comes in response to Ward 1 City Councillor Marilyn Iafrate’s Member’s Resolution (PDF) for a new city-wide lawn-sign campaign. It was created as a way to acknowledge those in Vaughan who have been impacted by dangerous driving. The campaign was officially endorsed by Council in the Committee of the Whole (2) meeting on Oct. 13, 2021 and approved at the Oct. 20, 2021 Council meeting (PDF).

This program is just one of a number underway related to road safety. The City has developed a MoveSmart Mobility Management Strategy, which sets the direction and priorities for the next five years while ensuring an efficient, reliable, safe and sustainable transportation system. MoveSmart was guided by input received from the public, which identified road safety and effective traffic management as top priorities to help meet the existing and evolving needs of the community. The strategy consists of four programs, one of them being the Road Safety Program, created to increase road safety and raise public awareness.

As part of MoveSmart, the City has developed a Speed Limit Policy to further ensure the safety of our most vulnerable road users, and the appropriate criteria continues to be used in the establishment of speed limits throughout the City’s road network.

For more information about the policy, including the newly implemented speed reductions in school zone areas and public laneways, visit vaughan.ca/SpeedPolicy.
