Annual 20-Minute Makeover draws thousands to clean up the city

A little goes a long way when it comes to taking care of the environment. As a champion for sustainability, the City of Vaughan has participated in 20-Minute Makeover for more than a decade. The annual environmental awareness program in support of Earth Day encourages people to take 20 minutes to collect litter in their local neighbourhoods. Today, more than 17,400 participants from 45 schools, 15 businesses, nine community groups and 14 City of Vaughan departments took part in the cause.

This initiative is one of many that supports the City’s continued commitment to being a leader in advocacy and education on sustainability issues. It also encourages the reduction of waste the community generates. The event was held in partnership with Pitch-In Canada, a national non-profit group dedicated to the environment, and was sponsored by Miller Waste and Glad. The cleanup educates residents about waste management and promotes civic stewardship.

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua participated in the kick-off event today in Ward 1 with students and staff of Discovery Public School. Vaughan Councillors also attended community cleanup events in their respective wards: St. Padre Pio Catholic Elementary School (Ward 2), St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Elementary School (Ward 3), Carrville Mills Public School (Ward 4) and Charlton Public School (Ward 5).
