Concussion Awareness Up For Discussion at Annual Vaughan Sports Congress

From major sports to youth sports, concussions have become an important topic for parents, coaches and players. Raising awareness and helping minor sports groups and organizations become informed is part of the City of Vaughan’s fourth annual Sports Congress.

This event brings together minor sports organizations in Vaughan for an evening to exchange ideas and receive educational information. This year’s Sports Congress includes two presentations: Silvana Farrace-Perry, a registered nurse at York Region Public Health, and Joanne Banfield, a registered nurse at Sunnybrook RBC First Office for Injury Prevention, will discuss concussion awareness. Jeff Carmichael, of Toronto Sports Council, will speak about preparing for conflict in sport.

The presentations will focus on how to recognize a concussion, the role of coaches, treatment of concussions, and return to play guidelines and policies. Sunnybrook, along with the Play Safe Initiative, has developed a guide for organizations to help them create concussion policies.

The Sports Congress takes place on Nov. 12 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at City Hall. Community adult and minor sports groups and organizations are invited to register by email at active@vaughan.ca. For more information, contact Paul Compton, recreation manager, at 905-832-8500, ext. 8358.
