Design a Flag to Celebrate Peace Tree Month in Vaughan

March 18, 2013

Youth and families of all cultures and faiths are invited to participate in the City of Vaughan’s upcoming Peace Tree Month festivities, including a flag design contest and nominations for the annual Peace Tree Ambassador Award.

Inspired by the award-winning film The Peace Tree by Mitra Sen, Peace Tree Month is held every June in the City of Vaughan for youth and families to celebrate peace and diversity through the arts, and work together to create new peace initiatives in schools and communities.

This year’s celebration will include a flag design contest and the winning artwork will be transformed into the City’s commemorative Peace Tree flag. The contest winner will be recognized at the City’s upcoming Peace Tree Ceremony, being held on Tuesday, June 11 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., and have their flag raised at Vaughan City Hall.

The contest is open to all Vaughan residents and students who live in the City of Vaughan or currently attend a Vaughan elementary or secondary school between Grades 4 to 12. Entries must be submitted by Friday, April 12. For complete contest details and to download an entry form, click here.

The 3rd annual Peace Tree Ambassador Award will also be presented at City Hall on June 11. The award recognizes individual participation in social, recreational and cultural activities that help build understanding and tolerance between communities or individuals, including personal acts of kindness, volunteerism, mentoring and leadership. Nominations must be received by  Friday, May 17. Click here for more details about the award and nominations.
