Vaughan Proclaims April as Parkinson Awareness Month

March 19, 2013

The City of Vaughan has proclaimed April as Parkinson Awareness Month, in support of the Parkinson Society Central & Northern Ontario.

Parkinson Awareness Month serves as an opportunity to raise public awareness of Parkinson disease, a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disorder. This disease, for which there is no known cure, affects more than 100,000 Canadians and six million people worldwide. It is a debilitating illness which causes increased loss of muscle control, slowness of movement, speech problems and over time deprives individuals of their independence and freedom.

The Parkinson Society Central & Northern Ontario is the regional voice of people living with Parkinson’s. In partnership with the Parkinson Society of Canada, the organization provides support services to help better manage the physical and psychological effects of the disease and works to find a cure through research, education and public advocacy.

The City of Vaughan issues proclamations to recognize and support non-profit organizations and community groups that are dedicated to increasing the awareness of health, social and humanitarian causes.
