Vaughan Celebrates Earth Hour and the 2013 Lantern Walk

March 19, 2013

The City of Vaughan will join other major cities around the world in support of the international Earth Hour campaign to turn off lights for one hour on Saturday, March 23 at 8:30 p.m. In partnership with Earth Hour Vaughan, the City will host a celebration at City Hall which will include the sixth annual Lantern Walk.

“Earth Hour Vaughan is a demonstration of our community’s commitment to practicing and promoting environmental responsibility," said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. "Reducing our energy use for just one hour illustrates how we can all have an incredible impact on the world around us – big or small, every action makes a difference.”

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. on March 23 and will include the following activities:

6:30 p.m. – Energy Exhibit: affordable solar power options; new small solar products; handheld e-waste recycling; youth Environmental Trivia Competition, lantern-making and Earth Hour videos
8:00 p.m. – Official welcome
8:30 p.m. – Lantern Walk
9:10 p.m. – Refreshments and entertainment
9:30 p.m. – Wrap-up: Green Hero Awards and prizes

The event will feature energy and waste exhibits and several solar options, including the leasing of roof space, investing in solar bonds, and small solar-powered products. There will also be a presentation of Green Hero Awards to Vaughan residents who have made exceptional contributions to Vaughan’s sustainability. Green heroes will be on hand to share the steps they have taken toward greener living. Participants are asked to bring a lantern or earth-friendly light, a cup for refreshments and to dress warmly.

“Vaughan is committed to being a leader in environmental sustainability,” said City Manager Clayton Harris. “Earth Hour allows us to partner with the Vaughan community and act on our shared commitment to keep our environment green and raise awareness of the impact of climate change.”

Earth Hour is held annually on the last Saturday of March and is organized by the World Wildlife Fund. The event has grown from a one city initiative in 2007 to a global movement that last year included 7,000 cities and towns and reached 1.8 million people in 135 countries across all seven continents.

In support of Earth Hour, residents are encouraged to switch their lights to energy-efficient bulbs and turn off lights when leaving a room to help make energy conservation a part of their everyday lives. For more information, visit www.earthhourvaughan.ca.
