The Canada Drive-America Avenue Bridge project is making headway in the city of Vaughan. Through previous public feedback opportunities, the City has compiled key findings and results. Citizens are invited to attend a virtual Public Information Session on Thursday, June 10 at 7 p.m. to  join the conversation, learn more about next steps and view proposed streetscape and landscape options. Attendees will also have the opportunity to speak directly to the project team and ask questions.

In 2010, the City of Vaughan undertook an Environmental Assessment (EA) study for the area bounded by Teston Road to the north, Jane Street to the east, Major Mackenzie Drive to the south and Weston Road to the west, with Highway 400 dividing the overall study area. The study was initiated to provide a description of existing conditions, offer alternative solutions and design concepts, outline a summary of anticipated impacts and suggest mitigation measures to implement throughout the process. An extensive public consultation process was also completed at the time. In December 2013, Vaughan Council approved the final EA study, which determined the preferred solution to be a bridge built over Highway 400 at Canada Drive and America Avenue. Currently, the project is in the design phase with construction anticipated to begin by spring 2022. Bridge completion is expected for 2023. View the project timeline for more details.

This project is a key infrastructure development for the city. It will connect Canada Drive to America Avenue and link the two communities on either side of Highway 400. The proposed design of the bridge includes a two-lane road with sidewalks and bicycle lanes on both sides – this will improve overall traffic movement in the area, shorten travel times, offer better access to local amenities, create access to enhanced transit systems and promote sustainable transportation options with pedestrian and cycling networks. It will also help improve emergency services response times.

Public engagement is vital to the development and success of this project. The City encourages citizens to continue the conversation – virtually. At the Thursday, June 10 virtual Public Information Session, attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • participate in a live question and answer period with the project team.
  • view the proposed streetscape and landscape design.
  • learn about the project’s status and timelines.
  • hear about the next steps of the project.
Register online to attend. A link to the session will provided in advance.

This project supports several City priorities as outlined in the 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan, including Transportation and Mobility, City Building, and Active, Safe and Diverse Communities.
