Do you know when to water your lawn?

Conserving water helps protect the environment and keeps reserves full

With more warm weather and sunshine on its way, you may be spending more time tending to your yard and garden. But do you know when the best time is to water to conserve this precious resource?

The City is urging citizens to work together to manage water use, especially during warmer temperatures when water demand is at its peak. The City’s Supply and Use of Water By-law 122-2003 (PDF) restricts outdoor water use from May 15 to Sept. 30, each year. This water conservation measure ensures an uninterrupted supply of water for everyone to use.

Outdoor watering is allowed from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on permitted days.
  • Even-numbered street addresses are restricted to watering on even-numbered calendar days.
  • Odd-numbered street addresses are restricted to watering on odd-numbered calendar days.
Industrial, commercial and institutional properties:
  • Watering is permitted between the hours of midnight and 7 a.m. on any permitted calendar day.
Automated sprinkler systems should only be operated during designated times. Exemptions are in place for specific businesses and functions. For example, freshly laid sod and newly planted shrubs and trees are exempt from these restrictions for a four-week period.

During times when water use needs to be further restricted due to low water reserves, it will be implemented in the following stages:
  • Water Advisory: all residents will be asked to refrain from any outdoor water use.
  • Outdoor Water Use Ban: the outdoor use of water will be prohibited, and residents found violating the ban will be charged. The maximum fine for violating an Outdoor Water Use Ban issued under By-law 122-2003 (PDF) is $5,000.
