Don’t let your recyclables be gone with the wind

It’s been a summer full of wind and rain, which may have caused your recyclables to blow out onto the street some weeks – especially if they weren’t correctly placed in the blue box. Here are some tips and tricks you can try to prevent this from happening next time:

  • Do not overfill your blue box. Leave space (approximately 7.5 centimetres or three inches) at the top of the box.
  • Place heavier items, such as glass bottles and jars, on top of lighter ones, such as paper and plastic containers.
  • Flatten, cut down and bundle cardboard securely, and pack them in the blue box carefully.
  • Purchase additional blue boxes or use a larger blue box (up to 121 litres, no attached lid or wheels) if you have too many materials.
  • If the forecast calls for wind overnight, wait to place your waste out until the morning before 7 a.m. Alternatively, consider putting your recycling out the following week – the City of Vaughan collects unlimited blue boxes weekly!
