Don’t park on the road when it snows

Are you planning to spend time with loved ones this long weekend? Don’t forget to consider parking options for your guests! With Family Day on Monday, more vehicles may be parked on Vaughan roads than usual – and with more snow in the forecast, make sure you’re aware of the rules in advance. 

Here’s what you need to know about on-street parking in Vaughan during the winter:

Do not park on the road when plows are out. Under the City’s Parking By-law (PDF), on-street parking is not permitted between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. in Vaughan without a permit or when snowplows are clearing the streets – even with a permit. Please make sure your vehicle does not block any part of the sidewalk or walkway and does not hang over the curb – this makes it difficult for snowplows to clear roads, windrows and sidewalks. 

In an emergency, every second matters. Blocking fire routes, fire department connections and fire hydrants can delay emergency fire response, and may result in a ticket and/or towing at the owner’s expense.

Plus, on-street parking blocks our plows from safely passing around parked cars, which could mean streets and sidewalks may not be completely plowed as a result!

Vehicles found interfering with snow clearing are subject to a fine of $85 or will be towed at the owner’s expense. The Parking By-law is enforced 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. On-street parking is not permitted between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. in Vaughan without a permit or when snowplows are clearing the streets – even with a permit.The fine for parking on the street between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. without a permit or when snowplows are clearing the streets is $100. 

Get a parking permit, not a ticket

The City offers three types of parking permits you can purchase:

• Visitor Parking Permits: residents may buy permits for their visitors to park on City streets.
• Construction Parking Permits: residents may buy permits to park their vehicle(s) on the street during construction projects or maintenance activities that prevent them from parking on their driveway.
• Resident Monthly Parking Permits: residents may buy parking permits to park their vehicle(s) on designated streets.

Parking permit applications are available online. 

Accessible parking

Valid accessible parking permits allow people to park in accessible spaces but do not provide exemptions from other parking violations, such as in fire routes. Permits must be valid on the date of parking and need to be displayed properly with the front of the permit clearly visible (face-up on the dashboard or attached to a turned-down sun visor).
