City of Vaughan staff marked the official launch of its 2011 United Way campaign yesterday by taking part in a fire truck pull and fundraising barbecue. The fire truck pull included 22 teams and each were required to participate in an endurance race which involved pulling a fully-equipped fire truck – 48,500 pounds – over a distance of 50 feet. Proceeds from the barbecue, door prizes tickets and team registration fees were donated to the United Way of York Region.

"The City of Vaughan is defined by our spirit of generosity and we are pleased to once again organize this fundraising campaign in support of the United Way of York Region," said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. "The United Way is a fantastic organization that is dedicated to making a positive difference in our community. By helping those who need it most, we are building stronger communities in our City and all of York Region."

The Tow the Line team from the Enforcement Services Department won the fire truck pull with a time of 20.29 seconds. A total of $3,063 was raised.
The City of Vaughan’s United Way staff campaign runs from October 5 to November 11, 2011 and will feature a number of activities. Events will include: a bake sale on October 21, a Halloween costume competition on October 31, a pool tournament on November 2, and a stair climb challenge at City Hall on November 11. Incentives for all donors include weekly prizes, jeans days and a week off with pay as the final grand prize draw. There is also a chance to win a Blu-ray player and the City Manager's parking space for two weeks. The staff campaign's goal is $65,000.
“I would like to thank Barb Cribbett, Commissioner of Finance and City Treasurer who is once again this year’s United Way Chair and congratulate the United Way team who organized a very successful launch to raise funds for the United Way of York Region,” said City Manager Clayton Harris. “I would also like to thank all the participants for making the event such a success.”
