Garbage has no place in Vaughan’s parks

Dumping household items and trash can lead to a maximum fine of $5,000

With the anticipation of spring, some residents may have already started cleaning out their homes and throwing away items they no longer want. But Vaughan’s parks are not substitutes for waste bins. The City is reminding residents we all have an important role to play in keeping parks clean.

Household dumping has a negative impact on the community and everyone’s quality of life. It can be harmful to the environment, dangerous for pets and wildlife as they may eat or be injured by discarded items, and costs money for the City to clean up.

Leave your household garbage at home for curbside collection, or take extra garbage to a York Region Waste Depot for safe disposal. When visiting Vaughan’s parks or trails, use the recycling and garbage bins provided by the City. If the bins are full, take your garbage home with you, including pet waste.

For the safety and well-being of everyone in the community, including front-line staff, littering and dumping are prohibited under the Dumping By-law 103-2020  (PDF). Individuals found dumping their household garbage are subject to a maximum fine of $5,000 per offence. If you witness illegal dumping or littering, please report it to Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or accessvaughan@vaughan.ca.

If you’re unsure where a waste item belongs, download the City’s Recycle Coach App through the Apple App Store or Google Play. The app also provides waste-less tips and a personalized collection schedule with optional alerts on what to put at the curb each week. The City also offers an online sorting tool so you can quickly check where an item belongs using the search bar. For more information on waste collection in Vaughan, visit vaughan.ca/waste.
