Follow these tips to keep your four-legged friends safe this holiday season

Whether you’re going for long walks or cozying up by the fire with your pets, the City of Vaughan is reminding residents of these tips to keep you and your furry family members safe this winter and holiday break.

  • Keep chocolate, alcohol, fatty foods, avocados, onions, garlic, cooked bones, Macadamia nuts, xylitol (in sweeteners for baking), cannabis edibles, raisins and grapes far from where pets can reach them – all these foods are harmful to pets.
  • Keep poinsettias, Christmas cacti, lilies, holly berries, mistletoe and pine needles away from pets as they are poisonous.
  • Ensure candles and wires from Christmas lights are out of reach of pets, and do not leave pets around candles unsupervised.
  • Wash or wipe your pet’s feet after a walk – road and sidewalk salt can irritate the pads on their feet.
  • Never leave pets alone in a car or outside for long periods of time during cold weather. Leave them at home where they are safe and warm.
If you are using the off-leash dog park at 299 Racco Pky. this holiday, remember to respect the rights of others and the rules of park use so everyone can have a fun and safe time outdoors. Make sure to leash your dog upon entering or exiting the off-leash area, follow the limit of three dogs per handler and ensure your dog is under control and in sight at all times. For all dog owners to feel comfortable while their dogs are off leash, ensure your dog is spayed or neutered and vaccinated, and is wearing a visible licence tag at all times. The City is also reminding citizens to pick up all pet excrement, fill in any holes your dog digs and not bring any human food or glass bottles to the park to keep the area clean and safe.

It is everyone’s responsibility to help stop the spread of COVID-19. When visiting dog parks, ensure you are practising physical distancing (PDF) by staying at least two metres (six feet) from others outside your household. Additionally, wash and sanitize your hands properly before and after visiting a park, and do not visit a park if you are feeling unwell or exhibiting signs of COVID-19.
