Speech centred on how purpose-driven leadership has shaped Vaughan

Since the turn of the twentieth-century, prime ministers, presidents and religious leaders from around the world have been among the many distinguished individuals to address the Empire Club of Canada (ECC). Today, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua delivered a keynote address on purpose-driven leadership and its role in Vaughan’s transformation at a sold-out event hosted by this prestigious organization.

Since 1903, the ECC has been one of Canada’s leading speakers’ forums. Steeped in history and tradition, it has welcomed some of the most prominent and thought-provoking leaders of our time, including Sir Winston Churchill, the Dalai Lama, Rt. Hon. Jean Chrétien and Bill Gates. Today, the ECC continues to discuss important issues that affect the lives of Canadians.

In his address, Mayor Bevilacqua shared the story of Vaughan’s remarkable growth within the last 10 years, highlighting values-based leadership as the reason key city-building initiatives have been advanced. This clear and focused approach has been instrumental in advancing notable achievements including an emerging downtown, a new hospital and York Region’s first post-secondary institution – Niagara University. Since 2010, more than 60,000 new jobs have been created and Vaughan has maintained an economic growth rate of four per cent – outpacing both the province and the country.

QUOTE

The solid foundation of the City of Vaughan’s success is our strong business community, our people and our commitment to Service Excellence. It was an honour to address the historic Empire Club of Canada to talk about the City’s remarkable growth. After 30 years of public service, I know that purpose-driven leadership has made Vaughan one of the best places to live and work. With values rooted in hope, optimism and determination, our city has seen a dramatic transformation. We now have an emerging downtown core, the first smart hospital in Canada under construction, a new 900-acre park, a subway and the first university in York Region. All these city-building initiatives have been realized because of a common vision focused on improving the standard of living and quality of life of all citizens. Vaughan is truly the place the be!”
-Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua
