How to set out waste in the winter

Do not place bins and bags on top of or behind snowbanks

In light of last week’s heavy snowfall, here are some waste set-out tips from the City of Vaughan to help ensure your collection day runs safely and smoothly this week.

  • Waste bins or bags buried in snow, frozen to the ground, on top of or behind snowbanks will not be collected. Crews cannot return for materials that are not accessible for collection.
  • Place waste approximately one metre from the curb on the right-hand side of the driveway (when facing the home) where possible. Doing this will reduce the risk of bins and bags getting covered in snow during the City’s snow-clearing process. Ensure the space around waste bins and bags is clear of snow.
  • Place waste out no later than 6 p.m. the night before and no later than 7 a.m. on your collection day. Waste collectors will not return for materials set out late.
  • If there is snow in the forecast the night before your collection day, wait until morning to set out your waste so it doesn’t get covered.
  • Keep waste bins and bags off the road.

Frozen waste materials

Did some of your items not get collected? In cold temperatures, some waste materials may freeze inside your bins and adhere directly to the interior. If the waste collectors can’t remove the items when tipping the bin, they will remain inside. Keep any materials left in the bin until your next collection day. Crews cannot return for bins that were not fully emptied due to freezing. To help prevent your materials from freezing, place your waste curbside in the morning by 7 a.m. instead of leaving it outside overnight.
