It’s ‘snow’ problem for Vaughan!

Everyone has a role to play in keeping the community safe this winter

The City of Vaughan is ready for winter with a fleet of salter/snowplow units, windrow machines, sidewalk machines, cul-de-sac-clearing machines and anti-icing units. But are you ready? There are a few ways you can help you, your neighbours and the City’s operations have a smooth and safe winter:

  • Help keep catch basins clear of snow and ice to prevent flooding during temperature fluctuations if it’s safe to do so.
  • Set waste bins back from the curb approximately one metre on the right-hand side of the driveway, where possible (when facing the home). They should never be placed on top of or behind snowbanks. This allows crews to safely collect waste and for the City to clear the snow effectively in residential areas.
  • Keep fire hydrants clear and accessible (one metre all around). Blocked, concealed or difficult-to-access fire hydrants can impede emergency fire response. As outlined in the City’s Water By-law 106-2022 (PDF), citizens who have a fire hydrant on their property or City property adjacent to theirs are responsible for ensuring the hydrant is always visible and unobstructed.
  • Take extreme caution around stormwater ponds and stay away from the ice that forms over them. Stormwater ponds are not designed or intended for recreational use, such as skating or sliding – no activities on the ice are safe. Water flow and levels can change quickly and without warning, which leads to an unstable surface. If you’re looking for a safe place to skate, visit vaughan.ca/skate.
  • Protect your water pipes from freezing, bursting and leaking. The best prevention is to keep them warm enough to stay above the freezing point. Visit the City’s webpage for more tips.
