It’s time to light the menorah
Join Mayor and Council at Vaughan City Hall today – Dec. 19
– at 3:30 p.m.
Chanukah is the festival of lights, and the City of Vaughan is
marking this festive season with its annual Menorah Lighting Ceremony.
The community is
invited to join Mayor Steven Del Duca and Members of Council today at 3:30 p.m.
at Vaughan City Hall (2141 Major
Mackenzie Dr.) to take part in this special event.
Rabbi Kaplan of
Chabad@Flamingo will preside over the ceremony, which will include a
performance by the Shmuel Zahavy Cheder Chabad Boys Choir. Traditional refreshments
will be available after the event.
Chanukah is an
eight-day holiday celebrated each year by people of the Jewish faith. It is
observed to commemorate the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem.
The candles used on the
menorah are admired during the holiday and are not used in any other purpose. A
menorah holds nine candles – eight symbolize the number of days the Temple
lantern blazed, and one is a helper candle used to light the others. It is
usually placed near a window providing people on the outside an opportunity to
share in blessings of the lights. The flame of the candle burns each night and
serves as a time for reflection and thanks.
Vaughan Council has also
endorsed Menorah Lightings at City facilities during Chanukah including Kleinburg
Library and Chatfield
District Park. A ceremony also took place at Vellore
Village Community Centre.
