Place up to six garbage items curbside during the weeks of Jan. 3 or Jan. 10

The City of Vaughan is once again kicking off the year with Double-Up Days! On your scheduled garbage collection day during the weeks of Jan. 3 or Jan. 10, you can place up to six items curbside – no paid tags are required. Visit vaughan.ca/WasteCalendar to view your 2023 collection schedule.

Here are some reminders to keep top of mind:

  • Place your items at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before collection and no later than 7 a.m. the day of collection.
  • Large or bulky items, such as mattresses, chairs and tables, can also be placed curbside, and each piece counts as one item toward the six-item limit. Read the guidelines for setting out large or bulky items for more information.
    • The City also picks up toilets curbside – watch this short video on how to disassemble a two-piece toilet properly for collection. Two-piece toilets must be disassembled to be picked up curbside.
  • All household hazardous waste (such as paint), electronic waste (such as cellphones and laptops) and batteries are not collected curbside and must be taken to a York Region waste depot.

If you’re looking to dispose of large metal items and appliances, such as dishwashers and refrigerators, the City collects these by appointment only on Thursdays. Book an appointment and pay through Service Vaughan or call the City at 905-832-2281. For more information, visit the City’s Appliance and Metal Pickup webpage.

Christmas tree collection

The City will also be collecting Christmas trees during the weeks of Jan. 3 and Jan. 10, depending on your scheduled collection day. Be sure to remove all tinsel and ornaments.

Do not put the tree in a plastic bag, and ensure it is placed off the road and snowbanks so collection staff can access it safely. If you have broken glass ornaments, safely package the pieces in a cardboard box labelled “broken glass.”

2023 Waste Collection Schedule

Check your mailbox for the 2023 Waste Collection Schedule! The new schedule provides weekly and seasonal waste collection changes – all on one page. It details how to purchase garbage tags, blue boxes and green bins and exchange damaged City-branded waste bins for new ones. It also highlights leaf and yard waste collection and other important waste services. You will also find quick tips and reminders on the correct bins and bags for waste materials, including the weight and size restrictions, accepted curbside. Visit vaughan.ca/WasteCalendar to view or download a digital version.

What goes where?

If you’re unsure what items belong in the garbage versus the blue box or green bin, download the Recycle Coach app through the Apple App Store or Google Play to help determine what goes where. The app also provides waste-less tips and a personalized collection schedule with optional alerts on what to put at the curb each week.
