Keep waste collectors safe
Do not put sharp objects in bins or bags
Our crews work hard to collect your waste, and they shouldn’t have to worry about getting injured from sharp objects in bins or bags. To protect our collectors from getting hurt, please ensure your waste is set out properly and safely.
Separate sharp waste. Sharp items, such as broken glass, dishes, knives, mirrors, razor blades and scissors, must be sealed in a cardboard box and clearly labelled “broken glass” or “sharp waste” and placed on top of or beside your garbage bins or bags.
Wrap breakable large items. Large mirrors and glass tables set out for collection must be wrapped in cardboard and clearly labelled “glass.” Items not wrapped will not be collected.
Never put needles in your blue box or garbage. Place needles in a puncture-proof, sealable plastic or metal container and drop them off at a participating pharmacy or a York Region waste depot. The Vaughan location is at 130 McCleary Crt.
Fluorescent light bulbs and tubes are considered hazardous waste and are not collected curbside. Please take them to a York Region waste depot for proper disposal.
Before you toss, check to see if an item is collected curbside by using the City of Vaughan’s online ‘What Goes Where?’ sorting tool. You can also download the free Recycle Coach app from the Apple App Store or Google Play for more sorting help. The app provides waste-less tips and a personalized collection schedule with optional alerts on what to put to the curb each week.
