Vaughan and York Region renew efforts to stop COVID-19
Effective today, business owners and operators in Vaughan and throughout York Region must have a policy in place to prohibit people from entering if they are not wearing a face mask or covering and must place approved York Region signage on the premises. The following statement was issued by Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua:
“Our battle with COVID-19 is not over. We must continue to employ every tool in our arsenal to protect people and save lives. Last week, York Region Council made the right decision to require operators to have a plan in place to deal with face coverings to ensure businesses can work, customers are served, and people are safe. This directive will come into effect today and will remain until November 30, 2020. It will further support the restart of our economy while protecting the health and safety of citizens. Exemptions will be made for individuals who cannot wear a mask due to a health condition and for children under the age of five years old. We will work with York Region Public Health and operators to ensure these plans will be successfully implemented. We want citizens to be informed, engaged and safe.
“Wearing a mask is a simple, effective and non-invasive measure to help control the spread of COVID-19. While we have come a long way in this fight, we still have a long way to go. We must continue to abide by physical distancing protocols, follow proper handwashing guidelines, and of course, wear a mask and make sure that it is being used, cleaned and disposed of properly.
“The City of Vaughan indeed has been a leader in combating COVID-19. Throughout the pandemic, we have ensured that quality services are delivered for families, businesses, and citizens. Vaughan was the first city in Ontario and the first municipality in York Region to declare a state of emergency on March 17. Our priority remains the health, safety and well-being of everyone that lives and works here.
“Constant, open, and transparent communication has been vital in leading the fight against this global virus. I remain in constant contact with all government levels and continue working closely with residents and community organizations on our round-the-clock response. My conversations with all senior leaders are focused on doing everything possible to defeat COVID-19. We have done much – there is no question about that – but we have much more to do.
“Case numbers in Vaughan and throughout the region tell us we are on the right track – but we must not veer from this path. We must remain disciplined and focused. We are all in this together, and we will emerge stronger.”
