Public Works team makes park, forest and garden maintenance a priority

The COVID-19 pandemic has not slowed the City of Vaughan’s Public Works team down! Keeping Vaughan clean and beautiful remains a top priority, with a steady focus on the safety and well-being of all citizens.

Guided by this approach, the Parks, Forestry and Horticulture Operations department continues to maintain and deliver quality services in Vaughan. Here are highlights from the spring 2021 operations plan:

Litter
The spring litter cleaning blitz in parks and open spaces began on Monday, March 15. This will continue alongside weekly garbage collection and turf cutting starting in May.

Forestry
Regular tree maintenance is currently operating at full capacity. Any hazards – such as trees or branches that need to be removed – are responded to in a priority sequence.

Spring planting is planned for mid-April to the end of June (weather permitting), with 1,350 new residential and park trees. The date for stump removals is to be determined.

Horticulture
Annual hanging baskets and planters will begin to beautify Vaughan from Victoria Day to mid-June. Shrub beds and planting bed maintenance (pruning, mulching, weeding, litter, watering) will run on rotation.

These maintenance services are a part of the City’s Beautification Strategy, which standardizes where the City should beautify, the types of plants the City should use and how often they should be maintained based on appropriate service levels. For more information on the strategy and to participate in an online feedback survey, please visit vaughan.ca/HaveYourSay until Sunday, April 18.

Gypsy moth prevention
In an attempt to control the gypsy moth population, treatment will start city-wide in May for 500 residential trees followed by an additional 500 trees in heavily infested areas.

These efforts and more demonstrate how the Public Works team continues to go above and beyond to provide essential services that safeguard and enhance the quality of life in this growing city.

Note: Outdoor amenities and the spring operations plan are subject to changes based on provincial orders and public health guidelines in response to COVID-19.
