Learn what it’s like to have a career in fire services

The deadline to apply for Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service’s Camp Molly is extended to Sept. 16


 Ever wonder what it would be like to work in fire services? Or what other careers are available beyond firefighting? There is an opportunity for females aged 15 to 18 years to learn more by attending Camp Molly. Are you or someone you know interested? The deadline to apply has been extended to Friday, Sept. 16 – submit a form today! 

Hosted by Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS), Camp Molly sets out to inspire the next generation of female firefighters. The motto: BE PREPARED to be empowered. BE PREPARED to be challenged. BE PREPARED to change the way you see yourself. 

The camp is for females to explore various career paths in fire services, including communications, Fire Code enforcement, fire investigation, fire prevention, fire suppression, public education, public information and media relations, and training. 

Participants will also have an opportunity to learn and perform many firefighting tasks, including basic firefighter skills, how to catch fire hydrants, manage hose lines and how to use aerial and ground ladders, personal protective equipment and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus. They will also receive presentations on search and rescue operations, auto extrication rescues, forceable entry procedures, water rescues, live fire demonstrations and take part in a combat challenge competition. 

To qualify, attendees must:

  • identify as female
  • be aged 15 to 18 years old as of Oct. 13, 2022 (the first day of Camp Molly)
  • be a resident of Vaughan
  • be in good physical condition and have a positive attitude
  • have a valid provincial health card
  • supply their own CSA safety footwear (participants will be supplied with all other personal protective equipment)
  • provide their own transportation to and from the VFRS training facility at the Joint Operations Centre, located at 2800 Rutherford Rd.
  • complete the online application form by Friday, Sept. 16 and include a short, typed essay (no more than 500 words) describing why they would like to attend the camp and what qualities they believe someone in the fire service should possess 
  • commit to attending all Camp Molly activities and required dates as follows:
    • gear fitting – Wednesday, Sept. 28. Allow yourself 30 minutes to size your required firefighting gear any time between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the VFRS training facility
    • orientation and station tour – Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. at the VFRS training facility
    • camp dates – Thursday, Oct. 13 through Sunday, Oct. 16, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

The camp will be held from Thursday, Oct. 13 to Sunday, Oct. 16 at the VFRS training facility. 

The application form is available online and in accessible formats upon request. The successful applicants will be notified by the end of September.
