On Thursday, December 6, residents gathered at Vaughan City Hall’s civic square as Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council participated in the lighting of the City’s official Christmas tree. The 36-foot tall Norway spruce was delivered by Drysdale Tree Farms, an environmentally-friendly Christmas tree plantation.

“Many families in our community have holiday traditions that involve lighting and decorating a Christmas tree,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “I believe that tradition is important for a community. Traditions allow us to pass on customs and beliefs from generation to generation. An inclusive, progressive city is one that is able to embrace diversity and celebrate it. We find strength in our ability to share our rich cultural heritage. We are proud to live in a community where we learn from each other's customs and traditions.”

The annual ceremony featured festive music performed by the Anthony Brancati Jazz Trio, hot chocolate and holiday treats and a visit from Santa Claus, who posed for individual photographs with children.

To assist families of many faiths and cultures during the holiday season, residents and visitors were encouraged to donate new, unwrapped toys for newborns to children 18 years of age as part of the third annual City of Vaughan Toy Drive in support of the CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish.

“Vaughan is a diverse and multicultural city that celebrates traditions of many cultures and faiths,” said City Manager Clayton Harris. “Special occasions such as the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony allows families an opportunity to join together and experience the diversity of our community.”
