Long-time Vaughan resident Martha Bell received a 2011 Heritage Community Recognition Program Award during a ceremonial presentation at this week’s Council meeting. The award, sponsored by the Ontario Heritage Trust, recognized Martha Bell’s efforts in the Natural Heritage category.

“Ms. Bell’s commitment to preserving Vaughan’s natural heritage environment is a source of inspiration and pride for all residents of Vaughan. Present and future generations will benefit from her belief and actions dedicated to keeping a healthy balance of natural and urban areas,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “As a volunteer, she continues to demonstrate the highest respect for community service.”

Her volunteer work includes being a founding member of the Wallace House Committee, the Woodbridge Farmer’s Market and the Woodbridge Earth Hour Lantern Walk Committee.  She conducts public tours of the Humber River trail system and sits on the Friends of the Boyd Park and East Humber River Committees.  Ms. Bell is a community advocate for built and natural heritage landscapes and the preservation of the natural environment, trails and open spaces.

“The City of Vaughan has developed Green Directions Vaughan, a strategy to preserve the City's natural environment and to promote sustainability,” said City Manager Clayton Harris. “Ms. Bell’s contributions are a leading example of the public participation needed to preserve and enhance the City’s natural environment and a sustainable future.”
