Mayor Bevilacqua celebrates Canadian Multiculturalism Day
Cultural diversity
remains a cornerstone of Vaughan’s ongoing
city-building
“Vaughan
is a vibrant, multicultural city and we are grateful for the many communities
that enrich our diversity and inspire goodwill.
“We
embrace our differences, knowing that rather than dividing us, the essence of
what makes us unique further strengthens our bond.
“Vaughan
most recently recognized Black History Month and Jewish Heritage Month and has
commemorative multicultural activities and observances planned for the upcoming
summer months, including Italian Heritage Month and National Indigenous History
Month in June.
“Recognizing
Canadian Multiculturalism Day in Vaughan represents an opportunity to promote
our values, heritage and history as well as celebrate the ideals that
contribute to Vaughan’s identity.”
Mayor
Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement after proclaiming at today’s
Council Meeting that June 27 will be recognized as Canadian Multiculturalism
Day in Vaughan.
“Our
city reflects the very best of Canada. Our citizens speak 105 different
languages and nearly half of Vaughan’s population was born abroad.
“We choose
understanding rather than fear when presented with new opportunities and
experiences.
“This is
the rock-solid foundation upon which our city-building efforts continue to progress.
“The
heartbeat of Vaughan is reflected throughout our community. It includes
game-changing initiatives like the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital, our new downtown
– the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, and North Maple Regional Park, which will be
larger than New York City’s Central Park.
“It also
includes the numerous city-wide cultural programs and celebrations for
residents, families, businesses and visitors to experience throughout the year that
help sew the social fabric across the city.
“On June
21, our community celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day with an art
exhibition in the Vaughan City Hall atrium entitled facingNORTH, and, on July 1,
our signature Canada Day event is being held at North Maple Regional Park.
“Through this commitment to recognize these
important cultural events, we appreciate the many thriving and diverse communities that advance
every aspect of our civic life.
