“Today, I was pleased to announce the City of Vaughan has received an award from the Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO). This award program recognizes outstanding economic development initiatives and the individuals who champion them. For the 2020 program, EDCO received 105 entries from communities and organizations across the province. Two Vaughan projects were among the 24 finalists.
"Season 1 of the Vaughan Rising Podcast won in the category of Investment Attraction – Urban, and the Public Art Placemaking: A Gateway Landmark Leading into the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre was a finalist in the Building Initiatives – Urban category.
"The Vaughan Rising Podcast explores initiatives, projects and people that have helped transform Vaughan into a city-building leader. Season 1 told the story of Vaughan's innovative developments, business-friendly climate and strategic approach to city-building. Hosted by Michelle Samson, Economic Development Officer at the City of Vaughan, the Vaughan Rising Podcast features in-depth conversations with leaders from across Vaughan, including CP Rail, CBRE, Niagara University, Mackenzie Health, Cortel Group, QuadReal, the YMCA of Greater Toronto, and SmartCentres. I was proud to join her to kick off the series by discussing Vaughan's remarkable transformation. The first season was very successful, garnering more than 10,000 downloads by listeners in more than 50 countries. I encourage you to visit vaughanbusiness.ca/podcast to learn more.
"In November 2020, we celebrated the unveiling of Vaughan's first temporary public art installation in the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre. This work was commissioned through a collaborative partnership between the City, Menkes Developments Ltd. and QuadReal Property Group. Featuring Vaughan-based artist Frank Mazzuca's graphic design, whose work has also been featured in Vaughan City Hall, the panoramic installation entitled "Metropolis in Motion" stands at 63-feet wide and 10-feet tall. It engages viewers travelling both east and west along Highway 7. Celebrating art and cultural expression enriches people's lives and helps foster a welcoming and vibrant community. This new public art piece contributes to the sensory experience we aim to achieve within the VMC.
"Congratulations to the City's Economic and Cultural Development team on receiving these awards. These two projects showcase the best of what our city has to offer and contribute to Vaughan's high quality of life and standard of living. I want to express my warmest and sincerest gratitude to the team for their ongoing efforts to raise our city to new and unprecedented heights.”
