City of Vaughan recently opened 10th library location to help residents learn, explore and grow

The following is a statement delivered by Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua:

“On behalf of the City of Vaughan, I join in recognizing Ontario Public Library Week and Canadian Library Month, which is an opportunity for all people to come together and reflect on the enduring contribution local libraries make to ignite imagination, improve access to knowledge and assist with personal and professional growth.

“In September, Vaughan opened its 10th public library at Vellore Village. There are many people and groups who helped to make this library a reality – I thank them for their commitment to our city. Libraries are a cornerstone of strong communities. They are gathering places for the people that surround them. They have modern learning resources that allow students to produce innovative and thought-provoking school projects. They offer programs and classes for all ages and help residents forge new relationships and strengthen old ones. Libraries promote literacy, instill a love of reading and help newcomers with their English language skills. In short, libraries enrich our lives and foster an inclusive environment.

“Vaughan’s Public Library branches house countless opportunities for neighbours to celebrate and learn more about diversity and the trailblazers of history whose sacrifices have been enshrined in pages for future generations to understand and appreciate.

“Over this past Term of Council, we opened the Civic Centre Resource Library – the crown jewel of our public library system. As we look toward the future, cranes continue to tower over the future nine-storey mixed-use building housing a YMCA, a Vaughan Public Library branch and PwC office space in the heart of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre – our emerging downtown.

“The libraries in Vaughan are the envy of the province – award-winning, innovative and accessible, Vaughan Public Libraries welcome more than 2.5-million visitors every year. This remarkable number is proof that Vaughan is the place to be – home to popular amenities enjoyed by people of all ages.

“I truly believe that education is power – it can take us many places and open doors in the future. Our libraries are one shining example of our commitment to help our community achieve their dreams. Vaughan Public Libraries are dedicated to providing high-quality services throughout the city. They offer a variety of services both online and in libraries – everything from board games and educational seminars, to preschool and technology-focused programs – there are learning opportunities available for all ages and interests.

“Vaughan is a rapidly growing and emerging world-class city. As we have grown, our libraries have adapted to serve present day needs of our citizens by creating and providing services that benefit all residents. This is what makes Vaughan a great place to live. As Mayor of this wonderful city, I am grateful for the mission, purpose and mandate of our public libraries and the contribution they make to improve all of our lives.”
