Mayor Bevilacqua recognizes International Day of La Francophonie

Vaughan celebrates the contributions of French-speaking citizens

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement on International Day of La Francophonie:

“Today, we celebrate the French language with Vaughan’s Francophone community and recognize their unique cultural contributions to our diverse city.

“More than 580,000 Francophones live in Ontario and we are proud that many of them have chosen to call Vaughan home.

“We embrace multiculturalism and this quality serves to strengthen the City of Vaughan in many ways. Our goal is to promote equality, inclusiveness, respect and tolerance for everyone who lives here.

“Our French-speaking residents add to the richness of our community, where an impressive 105 different languages are spoken.

“We know that many parents elect to send their children to one of our schools where French is emphasized in various aspects of daily learning. Speaking another language is a challenge worth pursuing. It can enlighten our perspective, open doors and ignite opportunities.

“Languages connect people and as a nation with two official languages, we share a bond with the 300 million Francophones on five continents who celebrate the French language.

“We believe in the importance of recognizing contributions made by Francophones in Vaughan, and across Canada, and we will continue helping them make their voices heard.

“To everyone celebrating today, at school, or at home and within their own community, I wish you the very best on International Day of La Francophonie.”
