Mayor Bevilacqua recognizes lasting impact of workplace incidents on communities
National
Day of Mourning officially proclaimed in the City of Vaughan
Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued following statement to commemorate the National Day of Mourning:
“On April 28, National Day of Mourning is marked every year across Canada and in more than 100 countries around the world.
“The City of Vaughan
observes this occasion by lowering our flags to half-mast. While this year we are
not able to gather to recognize this Day, I encourage residents to take a
moment to pause and reflect on the lives that have been forever changed as a
result of a workplace incident.
“The Fallen Workers
Monument at the Woodbridge Memorial Arena was established as a place for
citizens to visit and reflect upon the sacrifices that workers have made and
the hardships they continue to face each day.
“Last week, I
introduced a Member’s Resolution to officially proclaim every April 28 as
National Day of Mourning in the City of Vaughan. I was joined by all of my
Council colleagues in designating today as one of mourning and remembrance.
“On this day, may we
each take time to acknowledge the significant and lasting impact that workplace
deaths, injuries and illnesses have on families, colleagues and entire
communities.
“Given the current
global situation, this has certainly been top-of-mind in workplaces in Canada
and around the world.
“Vaughan recently
launched the Guardians of our Government campaign to pay tribute to, in a very
public way, the outstanding sacrifices our essential service providers are
making each and every day to ensure the well-being of our residents while
allowing critical city business to continue.
“This year, National
Day of Mourning will be yet another opportunity to recognize and pay tribute to
the front-line workers who continue to risk their health and safety in the
continuing battle against COVID-19.
“It is also an opportunity
to further commit ourselves to improving health and safety in the workplace to
prevent future deaths, injuries and illnesses from taking place.
“We all have a role to
play in keeping our workplaces safe and healthy and the City of Vaughan is proud
of its efforts in this regard.
“We are committed to
creating and sustaining a positive, safe and healthy work environment for every
employee. All levels of government must continue to work together to ensure
that everyone who goes to work comes home safely.
“I want to recognize
all workers playing an important role in maintaining essential services. Thank
you for your hard work, dedication and commitment to ensuring the well-being of
our community.
“As we continue manage the ongoing pandemic, let us be
hopeful that on April 28 of next year, we can all gather once again in the
courtyard at Vaughan City Hall to witness the lowering of the flags together in
honour of this solemn and meaningful occasion.”
