Mayor Bevilacqua recognizes Vaughan athletes participating in Canada Winter Games
Mayor Maurizio
Bevilacqua issued this statement following the opening of the Canada Winter
Games in Red Deer, Alta.
“Canadian athletes from
across this great country are gathered in Red Deer, Alberta to participate in
the 2019 Canada Winter Games. This is the largest multi-sport and cultural
event for youth in Canada featuring more than 150 events in 19 sports and up to
3,600 athletes, managers and coaches who have come together for the 27th
edition of the Canada Winter Games.
“The City of Vaughan has
a proud tradition of supporting and nurturing our youth athletes. We join with
Vaughan residents across the city in recognizing our fellow neighbours
participating in this year’s games – Julia Ng competing in badminton, Rio
Morita competing in figure skating, Rachel Krapman competing in judo, Brandt
Clarke competing in hockey and Vanessa Grancaterini competing in wheelchair
basketball. I am pleased to wish Vaughan’s young athletes the very best as they
embark on a competitive journey that will no doubt create lifelong memories and
experiences, regardless of where they may place on the podium.
“Vaughan is a rapidly
growing city with a great passion for physical activity. We are excited to be part
of this event that will unite people from across the country in a celebration
of sport and culture. We have a strong network of more than 60 sports groups
that specialize in everything from tennis and lacrosse to aquatics and figure
skating. These organizations, along with their dedicated team of coaches,
mentors and staff, play an important role in providing opportunities for youth
to excel in organized team sport.
“I am confident that
these young athletes will take forward with them in life the many valuable
lessons that come from participating in high-level competition. Together, they
represent the diversity that Vaughan so proudly stands for and remind us all
that no matter where we are from, we can succeed with drive and discipline.
“On behalf of all
Vaughan residents, I wish our athletes the best of luck. We will be cheering
for you and know you will make us proud!”
