Public consultations will help inform Council’s
decision on next steps
The City of Vaughan, in
consultation with citizens and stakeholders, continues to explore the various
options for managing short-term rentals – such as Airbnb. The community’s
feedback is an important part of this process. Starting Monday, Feb. 25, a
series of public consultation meetings will be held for the public to provide
input on new rules the City should consider putting in place.
The consultation
meetings will include facilitated discussions around the operation and impacts
of short-term rentals. Participants will be asked for their ideas on
regulations, such as whether short-term rentals should be restricted to
owner-occupied residences, and to consider the opportunities and challenges
associated with these accommodations.

Last year, the City
invited citizens and stakeholders to share their opinions on short-term rentals
through surveys available online and with Access Vaughan. The results indicated
70 per cent of respondents wanted the City to introduce new rules to govern how
and where short-term rentals may be permitted to operate. Feedback collected through
all public consultations will help inform Council’s decision on next steps.
A short-term rental
accommodation (such as Airbnb, student lodging, billet hosts, etc.) is
generally understood to refer to private individuals renting out their
residence, or part of their residence, for short periods of time in exchange
for a fee.
