City raises Olympic flag and will illuminate Vaughan City Hall red and white in support of athletes
The following statement was issued by Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua to mark the opening of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games:
“Today, at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, athletes and fans worldwide united virtually to welcome the 2020 Olympic Summer Games. The Games connect the global community, inspire lasting hope and instill international pride.
“Team Canada athletes represent the very best of Canadian citizenship. Through their hard work, dedication and perseverance, they demonstrate the enduring values that make us proud to be Canadian. Canada’s Olympians come from across the country, representing the vibrant diversity that defines and enriches us all. They stand as an important reminder that no matter your background, where you’re from, or who you are, excellence can be achieved through discipline, focus and persistence.
“To demonstrate our unwavering support for all athletes, I have requested that the Olympic flag be raised outside Vaughan City Hall this morning to mark the start of the Games. City Hall will also be illuminated in red and white this evening in support of Team Canada.
“On behalf of the citizens of Vaughan, I extend my warmest and sincerest best wishes to all athletes, especially Vaughan’s Daniel Gaysinsky, who will represent Team Canada in the karate competition in the +75kg Kumite division. The city of Vaughan will be cheering for Daniel and all of Team Canada as they compete on the world’s grandest stage. We know they will make us very proud. Go Canada Go!”
