The following statement was issued by Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua after a special presentation during today’s Special Committee of the Whole (Budget) meeting:
“The City of Vaughan has received the 2020 Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). This award acknowledges governments that prepare and issue budget documents of the highest quality and standards. This is the twelfth consecutive year the City has received this prestigious recognition, which is a testament to our sound approach to public finances and commitment to open, accountable and transparent governance. This remains fundamental to Vaughan's ongoing success. It has advanced our global position as an economic leader in financial management.
"The City of Vaughan's 2021 Budget and 2022 Financial Plan is the road map that will guide our efforts to build a better, more promising future for all citizens. Our budget is rooted in fiscal sustainability and serves to secure greater efficiencies and maximize every dollar we are entrusted to invest by the people of our city.
"Vaughan proudly maintains one of the lowest and most competitive tax rates in the Greater Toronto Area. We have passed budgets with a property tax rate at or below three per cent for the last ten years. Delivering a zero per cent tax rate in the City's 2021 Budget is a priority for myself and all Members of Council. Relief is at the heart of our COVID-19 recovery efforts, and the City of Vaughan remains committed to supporting residents and businesses during these uncertain times.
"The 2020 budget document provides a comprehensive overview of the City's budget guidelines and process, financial policies, operating and capital budgets, and reserves. We cannot attain satisfaction on these merits without the contribution of comprehensive financial planning. By working together, we are achieving excellence.
"I would like to congratulate the Financial Planning and Development Finance team, the Financial Services department and the Corporate and Strategic Communications department for their dedication and hard work on this year’s budget plan. Thank you for your continued guidance and ongoing efforts to mitigate the financial impacts of COVID-19 in our city.”
