Metrolinx responds favourably to Council’s call for a neighbourhood station at Clark Avenue

The below statement was issued by Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua following Metrolinx’s announcement that Clark Avenue Station will be included as the additional neighbourhood station as part of the Yonge North Subway Extension:

“I am pleased to welcome today’s announcement from Metrolinx that Clark Avenue station will be included as a neighbourhood station as a part of the Yonge North Subway Extension.

“In June, my Council colleagues and I were unanimous in our support of Councillor Alan Shefman's motion to include a neighbourhood station for the Yonge North Subway Extension. We are pleased that Metrolinx has responded favourably to our position, which also aligns with the City of Markham, as the subway extension's route north of Steeles travels along the border of our two municipalities. I want to once again thank Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Doug Ford for committing funds to this important project.

“The City of Vaughan has always been a strong advocate for the Yonge North Subway Extension. This project is critical to those who live, work and commute in Vaughan and beyond. I am encouraged by the commitment from our government partners at the provincial and federal levels. Commuters in Vaughan, York Region and the GTA can look forward to increased access to transit and reduced travel times. This link will better connect our community to an expanding regional transportation network while also driving economic opportunities along the Yonge Street corridor.

“Investing in rapid transit infrastructure has been a catalyst of urban transformation in York Region, particularly along rapid transit corridors, such as Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue. We are experiencing first-hand the positive benefits of having a subway in the heart of our emerging downtown, the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC). The VMC Subway continues to spur job creation, attract investments and stimulate significant city-building opportunities.

“It is important that we promote a well-designed intensification to maximize the use of existing and planned infrastructure, including transit and servicing. By creating new connections, building mixed-use development and investing in transit infrastructure, we will further support Vaughan’s growing communities and attract residents, businesses and talent to our city.”
