Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement after a ceremonial presentation during the June 28 Council meeting:

"I am pleased to announce that the City of Vaughan has received the Ontario Public Works Association's (OPWA) 2021 Project of the Year Award, in the transportation category, for the Clark Avenue Active Transportation Facility. The OPWA is a not-for-profit organization comprised of approximately 600 public works practitioners employed by the federal and provincial governments, municipalities, consulting engineers, utility companies, contractors and suppliers.

"The OPWA Public Works Project of the Year recognizes an individual, team or organization for the development, management and implementation of a creative idea, device, process or system that enhances the goals of public works in serving the public and protecting the environment.

"Vaughan's commitment to Service Excellence, and our mission to put our citizens first, is at the forefront of everything we do. City staff work tirelessly to ensure residents receive the best experience possible. This award is a manifestation of that hard work. In addition, the City of Vaughan's Clark Avenue project is a catalyst for future transportation developments and reflects our ongoing efforts to advance a well-connected and multi-modal transit system.

"To develop a fully integrated community, Vaughan supports the development of cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, which reaffirms our commitment to fostering active, safe and diverse communities.

"Implementing safety features for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and motorists through sidewalk and pedestrian crossing improvements, in-boulevard cycling facilities, as well as intersection and road upgrades can provide a more comfortable and predictable experience for all road users.

"Thank you to everyone who contributed to this project. This award is recognition of your dedicated public service."
