Vaughan rallies around
undisputed NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard
Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement after the Toronto Raptors won the 2019 NBA Finals, defeating the Golden State Warriors:
“The
Toronto Raptors made history by becoming the first-ever Canadian franchise to
win the NBA Finals championship. During each game, the players demonstrated
discipline, drive and determination. They have earned this victory and we are
proud to celebrate their relentless efforts.
“I want
to single out Kawhi Leonard for earning the 2019 NBA Finals Most Valuable
Player Award. He remains an inspiration to his teammates. And to young aspiring
athletes who dream of following in his footsteps and playing professional
basketball.
“During the
NBA Finals, the Raptors’ flag has proudly flown at City Hall. The energy, enthusiasm
and optimism for the team’s players and coaches thrived throughout Jurassic
Park Vaughan, where thousands of local fans gathered to cheer and support
throughout this series. An event of this magnitude has united millions of
people of all ages and all cultural backgrounds across Canada and in
communities around the world.
“The
City of Vaughan has a proud sports tradition that is second to none. Our
community centres feature modern equipment that can help future athletes train,
grow and reach higher. We have an active community that includes budding and
accomplished athletes, coaches, volunteers and fans. Together, they are strengthening
ties and reinforcing the noble values that organized sports promote, including
respect, commitment and teamwork.
“Let me
once again congratulate the Toronto Raptors for their remarkable win and for
becoming the 2019 NBA Finals champions. The team has made us proud and they
always will!”
