New group reflects Vaughan’s commitment to good governance

The City of Vaughan is looking for candidates to join its Audit Committee. Selected members will join a decision-making group that advises and assists Council in reviewing the City’s governance, risk management and internal control practices. Learn more about the committee, its mandate and eligibility criteria at vaughan.ca/council/committees. Interested individuals have until Friday, Feb. 19 at 4:30 p.m. to apply.

The Audit Committee will serve as a forum of discussion among Council, City staff, internal and external auditors, and members of the public. The group will assist Council in the execution of governance, accountability and management responsibilities by ensuring risks are being appropriately addressed, a control and compliance framework is in place, appropriate stewardship is being considered and an effective internal audit activity is completed. This includes reviewing and advising on:
  • the integrity, quality and transparency of the City’s financial, management and operational information.
  • the effectiveness of the financial and management reporting processes.
  • the effectiveness of risk management and control processes and practices.
  • the performance of the internal audit activity and assessing the effectiveness of the external audit function.
  • ethical business conduct and compliance with the City of Vaughan’s Employee Code of Conduct.
Under this mandate, the committee is also authorized to:
  • approve investigations into any matters it deems necessary.
  • obtain any information it needs from internal and external auditors and management.
  • request the attendance of any employee or external party at Audit Committee meetings.
  • discuss any matters with the internal audit director.
On Oct. 21, 2020, Council approved the establishment of an Audit Committee to further promote good governance and fiscal responsibility within the City – a strategic priority outlined in the 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan. This current public recruitment is for two qualified members of the community to sit on the committee alongside four members of Vaughan Council and five City of Vaughan staff members. Appointed members will serve on the committee from April 2021 until the end of 2022 and meet a minimum of five times; the first Audit Committee meeting took place on Jan. 25, 2021 with additional meetings to be scheduled in April, June, September and November. Meetings will be open to the public in accordance with the Municipal Act, 2001, and included in the schedule of meetings at vaughan.ca/CouncilMeetings.

To be eligible to apply for this committee, individuals must be a Canadian citizen, 18 years of age or older, not employed by the municipality, a certified internal auditor or possess an accounting designation, and a Vaughan resident or a Vaughan-based property owner or business representative. View the Terms of Reference (PDF) for additional details and criteria. Interested individuals must submit a resume and cover letter by email to clerks@vaughan.ca by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19.
