Property owners can pay remotely via pre-authorized programs, post-dated cheques, online banking or mail

As a result of the challenges presented by the global COVID-19 pandemic, the City has waived the late penalty charge on interim property tax bills until July 1 for the March 26, April 27 and May 27 payment due dates. Payment should be made by June 30 to avoid any late payment charges.

Further, the residential final property tax bills that are normally billed in June and due in July, August and September will now be billed in July with instalments due August, September and October. The non-residential tax bills will also be issued in July and due August, September and October.

Extending billing due dates and waiving the late fee is one of the many relief programs the City has implemented to support residents from the unintended consequences of the virus. This tax measure applies to both residential and non-residential properties.

While Vaughan City Hall remains closed, there are many ways property owners can make payments remotely. They include:

  • Pre-authorized payment plans: The City offers two options that include –
    • Eleven instalments: The tax instalments are broken out into 11 monthly payments which are withdrawn automatically from the selected bank account on the first working day of each month from Jan. 1 to Nov. 1. Applications are being accepted for the Aug. 1 payment date. The tax account must be at a zero balance to qualify for this program.
    • Six instalments: The tax instalments of the Interim and Final billing are withdrawn automatically from the selected bank account. Applications are being accepted for the 2020 Final billing instalments going forward. The tax account must be at a zero balance to qualify for this program.
  • Post-dated cheques: Post-dated cheques corresponding with the amounts and due dates printed on the tax stubs can be used. Please include all tax stubs with the cheques as applicable when sending to the City. A fee will apply if any post-dated cheques need to be sent back.
  • Financial institutions: Taxes can be paid at all major banks either in-person, through the bank machine, online or via telephone. Payments will also be accepted from any other financial institution that will facilitate tax payments. Some financial institutions may charge a fee for this service.
  • At City Hall: Drop-off boxes at each entrance of Vaughan City Hall can be utilized for submitting cheques. Cash should not be dropped off in these boxes.
  • By mail: Cheques and money orders should be made payable to City of Vaughan and mailed to Vaughan City Hall in the return envelope enclosed with your tax bill, in addition to the payment stub. Please mail early as payments delayed in the mail and received after the due date will be subject to a penalty charge. Do not send cash through the mail.
Vaughan’s 2020 interim residential and non-residential tax bills were mailed out in February 2020. If you have not received any of your tax bills, please contact the City of Vaughan Tax office immediately at 905-832-2281 or accessvaughan@vaughan.ca.

OTHER TAX RELIEF PROGRAMS
The City also continues to operate its Seniors, Low-Income Seniors and Low-Income Disabled Persons Property Tax Deferral program. The deadline for this program remains Sept. 30. In addition, the City also offered an extension to its Elderly Home-Owners Tax Assistance program for 2020 – a tax credit in the amount of $377 provided by the City to elderly homeowners who qualify. The deadline to apply for 2020 was May 15.
