The virtual event is today – Nov. 1   at 10 a.m. at vaughan.ca/live

The community is reminded to tune in this morning as the City of Vaughan hosts its annual Remembrance event to commemorate the brave Canadians who risked their lives during times of war. For the second year in a row, in response to COVID-19, this commemoration will take place online – tune in at 10 a.m. at vaughan.ca/live.

The virtual event will feature remarks from Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, Sgt. Natalie Dafoe, Warrant Officer Wali Mohamed and a performance from Lt. Jeremy Williams, among other highlights.

The ceremony will be accompanied by a City-led virtual exhibit, called “Vaughan’s Forgotten Heroes,” hosted by the Office of the City Clerk’s Archives and Records Management Services unit. The exhibit offers all who view it a deeper connection between past and present by showcasing personal war artifacts, such as letters and photographs. Residents from Vaughan are featured within the exhibit, including Lawrence Two Axe and the Maple Knit-Wit Club. By taking part in the virtual event and viewing the archival exhibit, participants will gain an understanding of the wartime experiences of historically marginalized individuals and groups.

Over the next few weeks, citizens will be invited to contribute to a community-driven virtual exhibit titled “Stories of Remembrance.” Poems, stories, photos and memories, as well as the submission criteria, are available on the City’s Flickr account.

Both virtual exhibits will be available at vaughan.ca/RemembranceDay with submissions being collected for the “Stories of Remembrance” exhibit until Friday, Nov. 26.

The annual Remembrance event reflects the City’s commitment to fostering active, safe and diverse communities that are inclusive, enhance community well-being and promote respect for the City’s heritage, arts and culture, as outlined in the 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan.
