Saving and investing today for a better tomorrow

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua has issued the following statement.

Developing a budget for a city of this size is a major undertaking and one the City of Vaughan takes very seriously. We remain committed to respecting your hard-earned tax dollars while continuing to provide the more than 200 programs and services that you and your family enjoy.

Once again we have delivered on our promise to keep property tax increases to no more than three per cent in 2016. This is in keeping with Council’s commitment to maintain a tax rate of three per cent or lower throughout this four-year term. I tabled this motion in January which was unanimously supported by Council. I would like to thank the budget task force for their hard work in finding efficiencies and savings.

This budget reinforces our commitment to fiscal responsibility and service excellence, and includes $14 million in savings and more than 700 capital projects that will contribute to the quality of life for everyone in our community. Approving the 2016 budget now allows us to begin the new year with our fiscal house in order, and start work on the many initiatives and projects that will move our city forward.

I would like to acknowledge the citizens who participated in the budget process this year. More people than ever came out to our public meetings and provided valuable feedback. I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone – we appreciate your contributions.

A great deal of work has gone into creating this budget, which allows us to focus our resources to support the community now and plan for the future. Vaughan is in the midst of a transformation and we remain committed to pursuing opportunities that enhance the quality of life for everyone in our city.
