Spring cleaning? Double-Up Days are coming

Image
Place up to six garbage items out without tags during the weeks of April 6 or April 13

More sunshine, birds chirping and warmer days are telltale signs that spring is here. That means more people will be going through their homes and doing a big clean for the season, which could result in more waste. Have no fear, Double-Up Days are back!

Scheduled for the weeks of April 6 or April 13, on your regular garbage collection day, residents can place up to six items of garbage for collection without paid tags. Large or bulky items, such as furniture, can also be placed outside for pickup and count as one item towards the limit. All materials must be set out by 7 a.m. on collection day. Read the guidelines for setting out large or bulky items.

Before an item is tossed away for good, see if it can be recycled for a new purpose. Donate gently used items to a local shelter or charity. Please refer to the City’s What Goes Where tool to determine how to dispose of any item.

Good Friday waste collection

Friday, April 2 collection will be moved to Saturday, April 3. Please ensure all waste is curbside by 7 a.m.

With many members of the community celebrating holiday meals and traditional customs, please refer to the following to ensure all waste is recycled and composted where possible:

What goes in the blue box?

The following items are recyclable:
  • plastic bottles, jug and containers
  • milk/juice cartons and drink boxes (no straws)
  • steel/aluminum food and beverage cans, trays, plates and foil
  • empty paint and aerosol cans (lids removed)
  • unbroken glass bottles and jars
  • household paper and paper products (books, magazines, etc.)
  • boxboard, broken down and flattened containers (detergent, dry food boxes, etc.)
  • corrugated cardboard bundled and placed beside the blue box, no larger than 0.6 metres by 0.6 metres by 0.3 metres (two feet by two feet by one foot)
What goes in the green bin:
  • all food and food scraps
  • food-soiled paper products  such as tissues, napkins, paper towels and plates
  • cut flowers and house plants
What goes in the garbage:
  • wipes, masks and gloves
  • Styrofoam™
  • black plastic
  • plastic bags
  • coffee cups and coffee pods
  • food pouches
When putting items in a blue box, it’s important to rinse out food containers such as soup cans, yogurt containers, jam jars and nut butter jars to ensure they can be recycled.

Reminder: Masks, gloves and other personal protective equipment (PPE) must be placed in the garbage, not the blue box. Tissues and paper towels go in the green bin.
