Use the City’s online tools to check what waste items go where

Out with the old and in with the new! If you’re getting rid of household items this spring, take advantage of the City of Vaughan’s many waste management and sorting tools to learn what items may be recycled or reused for another purpose.

Here’s an overview of the ‘What Goes Where?’ tool, Recycle Coach app, Curbside Giveaway Days, Waste-less Virtual Visits and more:

What Goes Where?

Use the online ‘What Goes Where?’ sorting tool to quickly and easily check where a waste item belongs by using the search bar.

Recycle Coach app

Download the waste reduction app, Recycle Coach, through the Apple App Store or Google Play to check where a waste item belongs. The app provides waste-less tips and a personalized collection schedule with optional alerts on what to put to the curb each week. All materials must be set out by 7 a.m. on collection day. Crews will not return for a missed collection.

Curbside Giveaway Days

One person’s unwanted but reusable items are someone else’s treasure! During Curbside Giveaway Days, place used items that are in good condition on your property (next to the sidewalk or curb) for others to take. This initiative gives useful items a new life while keeping them out of landfill. It also encourages recycling, builds a stronger community and contributes to a more sustainable city.

The first of six Curbside Giveaway Days starts May 28 and 29. Check your 2022 Waste Collection Schedule for dates throughout the year.

Mark items with a ‘FREE - Curbside Giveaway’ sign (PDF) and set them out between 7 a.m. Saturday morning and 5 p.m. Sunday night. Remember, materials not removed by then could result in a By-law violation; participants must remember to retrieve their items by 5 p.m.

Waste-less Virtual Visits

City staff offer one-on-one Waste-less Virtual Visit sessions – via FaceTime, WhatsApp and Microsoft Teams – to help citizens understand how to properly sort items, reduce the impact on landfills and answer any questions related to the City’s waste collection program. To book a free 20-minute appointment, contact Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or accessvaughan@vaughan.ca.

Remember, all household hazardous waste (such as paint and chemicals), electronic waste (such as cellphones and laptops) and batteries are not collected curbside and must be taken to the York Region Waste Depot at 130 McCleary Crt. in Vaughan. Additionally, construction and renovation waste are not picked up curbside but can also be taken to the waste depot in Vaughan – fees apply.

Residential appliance and metal pickup

If you’re looking to dispose of large metal items and appliances, the City collects these on Thursdays by appointment only. Book an appointment and pay online through Service Vaughan or call Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281. For more information, visit the City’s Appliance and Metal Pickup webpage.

Purchasing waste bins

Need a new blue box or green bin? You can purchase blue boxes and green bins online through Service Vaughan and have them delivered right to your door. Alternatively, purchase these items in person at select community centres. You can also sign up to exchange a broken City-issued blue box or green bin for a new one at vaughan.ca/ServiceVaughan.
