Whether you’re planning a grand celebration or an intimate ceremony, applying for a marriage licence is the first step, and it’s even more convenient now through a new online application process!

The Office of the City Clerk is responsible for issuing marriage licences in Vaughan – here’s everything you need to know to check this important step off your wedding to-do list!

How do I get a marriage licence?

If you’re planning on getting married in Ontario, you can apply for a marriage licence by taking these three simple steps:

1. Apply online. Complete and submit your application through the provincial portal where you can also securely upload your identification documents.

2. Book an appointment. Use the online booking system to schedule a convenient time to finalize your application.

3. Pick up and pay. Visit Vaughan City Hall (2141 Major Mackenzie Dr.) on your scheduled date to pay the required fee and pick up your marriage licence.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

You must present the following documentation at your appointment for a marriage licence to be issued:

  • two pieces of original government-issued identification for both applicants, such as a birth certificate, passport, driver’s licence or Ontario photo identification card. Photocopies of identification will not be accepted.
  • licence fee of $205, which can be made payable to the City of Vaughan via cheque, debit, Visa or MasterCard.
  • proof of minimum age requirements. You must be 16 years of age or older to get a marriage licence and will require written consent from your legal guardian(s) if you’re under this age. You may pick up a consent form at the Office of the City Clerk.
  • if remarrying after a prior marriage, you will also need to present your Certificate of Divorce or Annulment Order (a divorce order or divorce judgement will not be accepted)
