Statement by Mayor Bevilacqua on plane crash in Iran
Flags remain lowered to half-mast at City
facilities, online page of condolences arranged for public to express sympathy
The
following is a statement by Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua about the events
unfolding regarding the crash of Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 in
Tehran, Iran:
“The
world continues to be shaken by the recent crash of Ukraine International
Airlines flight PS752 which claimed the lives of 176 people, including 63
Canadians.
“As
public reports further unfold, the pain and profound sense of mourning runs
deeper into communities like our very own.
“We now
know that among the innocent lives lost in this tragedy, there are
professionals, students and countless other connections to Vaughan families,
friends and neighbours across York Region.
“We will
continue to monitor this situation as information is made available. Our
thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the
first-responders.
“I have
requested that flags at City of Vaughan facilities remain lowered at half-mast
in memory of the victims until further notice. People are encouraged to express
their messages of love and sympathy on the City’s online condolence page.”
