Statement on City of Vaughan: the year in review
Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua has issued the following statement.
As we approach the end of 2016, we can look back on what was an exciting and eventful year for the City of Vaughan. From the groundbreaking of the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital to the opening of the first office building in our downtown core – the KPMG Tower – it has truly been a year to remember.
Our city was named one of the top 20 best places to live in the country and one of the top two best places in Ontario to do business, creating jobs and prosperity for our citizens. We celebrated our 25th anniversary with a signature event in October where we recognized the first 25 people to receive the Order of Vaughan, our City’s highest civic honour.
We marked the completion of track installation for the subway extension to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and joined Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca for a funding announcement for the Yonge Subway Extension. The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario was here on Canada Day for a special citizenship ceremony. Throughout the year, our team continued to provide Service Excellence, enhancing our quality of life and standard of living. We ended 2016 on a high note with a new record donation to United Way Toronto and York Region of $105,700.40.
It was a special year and we have a lot to look forward to in 2017 as we prepare for the 150th anniversary of Confederation. We know we live in the best country in the world and throughout next year we will all show our pride and patriotism, and demonstrate our love and respect for this great nation we all call home.
We remain committed to delivering on our vision for Vaughan that supports city-building, residential growth and strong employment opportunities. By working with our partners – businesses, developers and other levels of government – we have been able to achieve great things. I would like to wish everyone in our community and beyond all the best for the holiday season and the coming year.
