Statement: Mayor Bevilacqua calls special Council meeting
The following statement was issued by Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua in response to the emerging COVID-19 situation:
“The health and safety of Vaughan citizens and employees is our top priority and we continue to implement necessary preventative measures to protect our community. In response to the evolving COVID-19 challenge and its unprecedented impact on the global economy, I have requested that a special Council meeting take place tomorrow to determine next steps and to enact measures to support citizens, consumers and the business community.
“Vaughan’s economy remains strong, showing GDP growth year over year just shy of 3 per cent from 2018 to 2019. However, Vaughan’s robust manufacturing sector, supply-chain and logistics cluster, and emerging tourism sector, among others, may be affected by COVID-19. We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to work closely with our government partners and stakeholders to support Vaughan’s business community during this critical time.
“Earlier today I met with staff at the Joint Operations Centre to further review what action has taken place and how we will move forward. I continue to be in contact with regional, provincial and federal leaders.
“My message to Vaughan citizens and business owners is clear – we are all in this together, and we will emerge stronger.”
