Statement: Mayor Bevilacqua welcomes delegation from Ghana
Discussions rooted in cultural development and city-building
Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement after a meeting with municipal leaders from the Ashanti Region of Ghana and representatives from the Consulate of Ghana in Toronto:
"Today at Vaughan City Hall, I hosted a delegation from Ashanti – Ghana’s most populous region. This was an opportunity to strengthen cultural relations and discuss opportunities to generate economic development. I welcomed the opportunity to share more about our leading city-building initiatives such as the construction of the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital, the opening of the subway and the expansion of Niagara University to our community.
“The Ashanti Region is home to more than 5 million people. Government and economic linkages have fostered an important connection between Ashanti and communities across Canada.
“For the last 60 years, our nation’s bilateral relations with Ghana have remained strong. We continue to safeguard and champion the shared values of democracy and the need to ensure that all citizens are engaged. We are further aligned through our countries’ active memberships in the Commonwealth of Nations and the International Organization of La Francophonie.
“As Mayor, I remain committed to fostering greater cooperation with the global community. Vaughan is blessed and enriched by the diversity of our citizens. People from around the world have chosen our city to build a better, more promising life for their families. Nearly half of our population was born abroad. Vaughan residents speak 105 languages. Multiculturalism allows us to further enhance global connections both culturally and economically.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to deepen Vaughan’s relationship with Ashanti.”
