Announcement comes after Vaughan’s request at special Council meeting

The following statement was issued by Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua in response to new provincial legislation to allow virtual municipal council meetings:

“I am pleased that the provincial government introduced legislation that allows for municipalities, like Vaughan, to hold virtual Council meetings. Furthermore, I commend all parties in the provincial legislature for their spirit of cooperation and for undertaking a swift and collaborative approach by voting unanimously in favour of measures to support workers, municipalities and retailers in response to COVID-19.

“Earlier this week, I called a special Council meeting to discuss Vaughan’s COVID-19 response, which in addition to endorsing the Vaughan Business Action Plan, we requested that the provincial government grant authority for municipalities like ours to hold virtual council meetings that would allow important city business to continue while still adhering to the critical measures for social distancing.

“During these unprecedented times, we must do everything in our power to ensure we minimize the unintended consequences of COVID-19 in our city. That is why we have taken meaningful steps to address the immediate situation, including the Vaughan Business Action Plan, which is comprised of a series of temporary measures designed to safeguard the local economy and protect businesses, consumers and all citizens. Additionally, effective immediately, the City is waiving the late penalty charge on interim tax bills. Payments for the March 26, April 27 and May 27 due dates will not be subject to any late payment fee or interest until June 1. Further extensions may be granted thereafter. Vaughan residents and businesses want to know that we, as a local government, are looking out for their best interests and quite frankly, it is what they deserve. Despite the ongoing uncertainty about COVID 19, we remain committed to working for the citizens of Vaughan.”

“I want to reassure the people of Vaughan that by taking the proper precautions, we can all take measures to stop the spread of germs and keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. Wash your hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer; sneeze and cough into your sleeve; avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth; avoid contact with people who are sick and stay home if you are feeling ill; increase cleaning and disinfection of high-touch surfaces using regular household cleaners.

“My message remains unequivocal. We are all in this together and we will emerge stronger.”
