Greenbelt Urban River Valleys Outreach Project aligns with Vaughan’s green city vision

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued this statement following an educational open house hosted at Doctors McLean District Park:

“In Vaughan, we are dedicated to championing healthy and sustainable neighbourhoods that will continue to elevate the quality of life for everyone. As one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities, we understand that our actions today will help shape our future tomorrow.

“Planning a resilient city is about striking the right balance between sustainable development and protecting the environment. We appreciate the importance of preserving our natural ecosystems, and as a result, we are taking steps to safeguard Ontario’s Greenbelt.

“Through a collaboration with the Greenbelt Foundation and Park People, the City of Vaughan was awarded an $11,092 grant for a Greenbelt Urban River Valleys Outreach Project. The funding will be utilized to help educate citizens about the significance of the Urban River Valleys and raise awareness about our extensive trail network. This project contributes to our mission of encouraging conservation and implementing eco-friendly initiatives in every aspect of our city-building efforts.

“Vaughan is truly a green city. We are connecting communities by building safe, accessible, and environmentally-conscious spaces for all.

“With more than 230 kilometres of signed cycling and pedestrian routes, including 60 kilometres of multi-use recreational pathways, the City offers countless opportunities for citizens and visitors to get outside and be active. The Great Walks of Vaughan was established in 2018 to encourage the exploration of our local neighbourhoods, nature walks, and trails.

“As one of the City’s signature initiatives, the 900-acre North Maple Regional Park includes two FIFA-certified artificial turf soccer fields, spectator seating as well as more than five kilometers of trails.

“To expand our tree canopy, more than 22,000 trees have been planted around our community as part of the City’s tree replacement program.

“In 2018, Council approved the National Wildlife Foundation’s Mayor’s Monarch Pledge to create a pollinator-friendly habitat. Additionally, to encourage sustainable transportation, the City of Vaughan offers free electric vehicle charging stations for public use at several locations.

“Every step, big and small, contributes to our shared vision of fostering a safe and sustainable community for everyone. Our collective efforts to protect our natural environments is creating a better and brighter world for future generations to come.”
